“[You don’t] have to become somebody else in order to be healthy. It’s actually already all there.” The wisdom of one’s own culture is the knowledge to know how to cultivate human health. Kama Trudgen uses this philosophy to return health to the Yolngu people of Northeast Arnhem Land. As seen on the Netflix documentary, The Magic Pill, the chronic illness statistics among the Yolngu people are horrific. Kama’s organization, Hope For Health, runs health retreats for the Yolngu people, helping them reclaim health using a traditional diet. She then uses health coaches within the community to help solidify the learnings from the retreat. The most beautiful part? Those health coaches are Yolngu people themselves. This episode is chock full of incredible wisdom around the wisdom of traditional cultures, and what modern culture—and practicing health coaches!—can learn from them.
